Grama Digi Vikasana (GDV) is a unique program that initially started as a way to enable continued learning for rural children during the pandemic. The idea here was to equip Gram Panchayat Libraries, now called Arivu Kendras, with digital devices like Android phones, computers, and Android TVs (for group learning), along with the necessary internet connection to enable access. In addition, these devices were preloaded with academic content to enable offline learning where internet availability is sporadic.
Since then, the program has grown to nearly 4000 Gram Panchayats, mainly due to the tremendous support we have from the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) department. The librarians employed by the panchayat act as the anchor for the GDV program. In addition to providing devices and content, the program aims to provide essential real-life digital skills to everyone in the community so that no one gets left behind in an increasingly digital world.
In addition to the devices, a learning management app called Sikshanapedia is provided on all the devices. It is available both as an Android app and as a web app to be used on any browser.
GDV program has been set up in 3797 Arivu Kendras as of March 31st 2024. The program is almost entirely funded by Dell Technologies as part of their CSR by providing funds for devices and also covering the cost of the program implementation across the entire state.
